Supportive Housing Programs

Housing is among the greatest needs in the population we serve. The concepts of 'Supportive Housing' and 'Housing First' mean that individuals are more likely to succeed in their recovery and ability to live in the community if they can secure housing (and rental assistance) with supportive services available, often on site.

MHR has steadily increased its supportive housing programs since 1996. The Supportive Housing Programs at MHR reflect a variety of models in multiple counties by providing rental assistance, housing transition and tenancy sustaining services to individuals recovering from mental illness, substance use, and/or complex health issues who are also experiencing chronic homelessness.

The following is a list of possible activities with which MHR’s Supportive Housing Program staff may be helpful:

· Education on landlord/tenant roles, rights, and responsibilities

· Coaching on developing and maintaining key relationships with landlords

· Independent living skills training, including household management, symptom management, interpersonal communication, budgeting, shopping, cooking, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle practices

· Early identification and intervention for choices/actions that may jeopardize housing

· Support to make choices about alcohol and drug use that minimize harmful consequences

· Referral to additional services

· Coordination of services with other providers and natural supports

· Assistance applying for housing or other benefit assistance

· Assistance accessing vocational activities such as volunteering, employment, or school

· Crisis assistance and prevention
